What changes the
finished job?
1. Fence type and details
Panel, feather edge, composite and post-and-rail systems use different materials and installation details. A like-for-like comparison should name the panels or boards, posts, rails, gravel boards, trims, fixings and finish—not just the headline fence type.
2. Height, ground and exposure
Height and exposure affect the support needed. Slopes, soft ground, roots, rubble and existing concrete can change digging and installation time. The right post and fixing detail depends on the product and the site.
3. Access and equipment
Steps, narrow passages, long carries, parked vehicles and restricted working space affect how materials and tools reach the boundary. Augers, saws, mixers or a micro-digger may be appropriate on some jobs, subject to safe access and the agreed plan.
4. Gates and separate runs
A gate needs suitable support, hardware, clearances and a sound relationship to the adjoining fence. Corners, level changes and multiple separate runs also need measuring rather than being inferred from one overall length.
5. Removal, disposal and delivery
Old panels, posts, concrete and vegetation can take time to remove and may need separate disposal arrangements. A clear quote says whether delivery, equipment hire, removal and waste handling are included.
6. Labour, travel and VAT (if it applies)
The quote should state the agreed labour and work included, any travel consideration, payment stages, VAT (if it applies) and exclusions. These details matter to the total and should be confirmed in writing before work begins.
Compare like with like. Ask every contractor to state the fence type and build-up, height, post and base detail, gates, removal, available access, delivery, disposal, tax position if applicable, guarantee and payment terms. A low headline number may leave important work out.
